Vel Pillay discusses GFSI and Food Safety Modernization Act impacts - LRQA Food Forum Brazil – Blog 1

Over the last year, there has been a paradigm shift in the way the food industry and government look at assessing food safety. Two events that have changed the landscape are the recognition of GFSI benchmarked schemes and the enactment of the Food Safety Modernization Act in the US. Both will have an impact on the food sector in the Americas and around the world, from an economic as well as risk management point of view.

LRQA together with food safety experts from the industry are conducting a series of awareness sessions on the involvement of GFSI benchmarking schemes in particular FSSC 22000, a process based approach, to reduce redundancies and harmonize food safety assessments. The first one will take place September 1, 2011 in Sao Paulo, Brazil and we have a line up of experts from both LRQA, including myself and Cor Groenveld, and the food sector experts from leading international companies in Brazil, including Cargill, Citrosuco and Usina Alta Mogiana, who will lead presentations and discussions on the role of GFSI, their schemes and the proper way to implementation of a food safety management system.

Throughout the event, the expert panelists will discuss real world examples and just as importantly, the do’s and don’ts. I am confident that this will help industry gain an understanding on how to keep it simple and implement in an effective and efficient way.

I look forward to meeting, networking and exchanging ideas with the 150+ food safety professionals who have registered to attend.  Learn more about the LRQA Food Forum Brazil.
