I arrived this weekend in Mexico City in preparation for the LRQA Food Forum Mexico to be held tomorrow October 18. Last week I attended the GFSI Focus Day and the LRQA Food Forum in Tokyo, Japan, and this week we have the LRQA Food Forum here.
With a population of more the 20 million, Mexico City is the largest city of Latin America and one of the largest in the world. Mexico City is an exciting city. With beautiful buildings like the Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad, the Zócalo being the second largest square in the world and lot’s of shops, restaurants and street markets, it is the 24/7 always sparkling capital of Mexico.
And the food is fascinating. The huge variety of dishes, fresh fruits, vegetables and spices makes the Mexican food very popular around the world. This makes it also clear that food safety and quality are an important issue in Mexico. Not only for the local market but also because Mexico exports an exceptional amount of food primarily to the USA but also to other parts of the world. There are also a lot of international companies active in Mexico like Coca-Cola, Kraft, Heineken, Danone, and Wal-Mart; therefore, Food Safety,Sustainability and Social Responsibility are high on the agenda in Mexico.
This Tuesday, October 18 LRQA will host its next Food Forum in Mexico City. We’re excited that 270 delegates have registered to attend tomorrow’s session, making this event one of the largest regional food events ever organized by LRQA. Amongst these are representatives from food manufacturers, retailers, and other supply chain stakeholders as well from both national Mexican organizations and food multinationals. I am proud and honoured to attend. Amongst the speakers joining me are Alfredo Illescas Díaz from Coca-Cola Femsa and Vel Pillay, Manager Food Programs for LRQA Americas. Tomorrow’s event will be hosted by Sergio Garza, the Managing Director of LRQA Mexico.
I am excited to present an update on FSSC 22000, the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and the Foundation for Food Safety Certification. The fact that Mexico exports a lot of food products to the USA and the presence of Food multinationals makes that these topics of high interest to attendees.
