Introduced in 2012, the Indonesian government has been encouraging the implementation of SMK3, especially to companies with more than 100 employees which engage in activities that can pose potential dangers to their employees and the environment. These companies are to carry out an audit of their SMK3, submit an audit report to the authorities and are also subjected to assessment by an independent institution. SMK3 consists of three stages: "Beginner," "Transition" and "Advanced," each with increasingly more stringent criteria.
